Architectural Finish Palettes

Selecting the Right Ones

Contributed by Lisa Lombardy

Selecting finishes is something I truly love to do. I feel that it is such an important part of the design process for this is where you start to create the look and feel you and your client are trying to achieve. This is also the foundation of where other design elements reference back to such as upholsteries for furnishings, light fixtures, hardware, etc.

When selecting finishes I always have the main “staples” in my palettes and grow from there: carpets, stone, wood, metal, lacquer and paints.

Once I have a direction I start to select accent wallcoverings, feature walls such as back painted glass, graphics, textured walls, living walls, etc. These elements start to activate the space and may introduce branding opportunities.

Lastly, I move into the details of each area, i.e. reception areas, café’s, lounges, conference rooms, copy spaces, etc. and select the necessary finishes that coordinate with the main palette. When a project is completed, these are elements that people will experience, touch and respond to…it’s the most exciting part!
